  • The rules and the creatures’ numbers come from the System Reference Document 5.1, shared by Wizards of the Coast under a Creative Commons licence.
  • The pixel-art look runs on Luminati, an open-source engine, and on three.js.
  • The maps, creatures, heroes and effects are drawn by code as the page runs, ours and the engine’s. None of them are copied from published books or adventures.

The game rules: SRD 5.1

This work includes material taken from the System Reference Document 5.1 (“SRD 5.1”) by Wizards of the Coast LLC and available at https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/systems-reference-document. The SRD 5.1 is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License available at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/legalcode.

What comes from the SRD 5.1: the creatures’ numbers (armour class, hit points, abilities, attacks and their dice) for creatures that are in it, and the character rules (races, classes and their levels, features, weapons, armour, spells and their descriptions). Short trait lines are cut down from the SRD’s text or are our own summaries. The bosses, chiefs, variants and other creatures that aren’t in the SRD 5.1 are our own work.

We converted that material from the structured JSON of the 5e-database project (github.com/5e-bits/5e-database), © 5e-bits and contributors, released under the MIT License.

The engine: Luminati

Torch & Tile is built on Luminati, an open-source 2.5D pixel-art engine for three.js (gitlab.com/stubborn-hug/lumina), © 2026 Luminati contributors, used under the MIT License. “Luminati” is that project’s name; Torch & Tile is a separate product and is not made or endorsed by it. The licence:

Music and sound

The ambience, the jukebox’s chiptune songs and some sound effects are made by code as the page runs. Music files a DM adds stay in that DM’s browser. The recordings we ship are:

  • Music: Seven March, Controlled Chaos, Heart of the Beast, Ossuary 6 - Air, Gathering Darkness, Ghost Story and Aftermath by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com), licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0). Re-encoded to a smaller size.
  • Monster and Creatures Sound Effects PACK 001 by Jesús Lastra (jalastram), opengameart.org, licensed CC BY 3.0 (creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0). Two clips cut shorter, levelled, faded and re-encoded.
  • Released into the public domain (CC0 1.0), credited anyway: RPG Sound Pack, Zombies sound pack and Battle sound effects by artisticdude; Impact Sounds, RPG Audio and Casino Audio by Kenney (kenney.nl); 80 CC0 creature SFX by rubberduck; Monster or beast sounds and Silent beast growls by pauliuw; Monster Sound Effects 2 by Ogrebane; CC0 Deep Monster Roar by trazzz123; 37 hits/punches by Independent.nu; Insect or alien scream by qubodup; Tiny creatures sounds by fvcalderan; footsteps by TinyWorlds; Level up, power up by WobbleBoxx Workshop. All from OpenGameArt.org unless named otherwise.

Our own work

The creature and hero sprites, the effects and the ground, walls and trees of every map are painted by code as the page runs, ours and the engine’s, in the engine’s pixel style. A few of the ready-made places come with the Luminati engine; the others, and every creature not in the SRD 5.1, are our own designs. None of them copy the maps or art of a published book or adventure. Pictures and maps that players and DMs upload belong to them (see the Terms).
