The fine print

Terms of Service

Draft of 29 October 2026

In short

  • Players always play free and never need an account.
  • Everything is free while we’re in beta. DMs will pay for a monthly plan after that, and we’ll tell you before anything costs money.
  • What you make or upload stays yours. You let us store it and show it to the people at your table, so the game works.
  • Keep your DM key and player key private. Anyone who has one can open what it opens.
  • Be decent at the table, and only upload pictures you have the right to use.
  • The AI helpers are optional and stay off unless a DM turns them on.
  • It’s a beta. Things can break, so keep a copy of anything you can’t lose.

This summary helps you find your way. The full terms below are what count.

1. Agreeing to these terms

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) are an agreement between you and Cheyenne Cody Nolan (“we”, “us”, “our”), who run Torch & Tile (the “Service”): the website, the shared table, the map builder, the character tools and everything that comes with them.

By using the Service you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, which explains what we do with your information. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the Service. If you use the Service for a group or an organisation, you agree for it too, and you confirm that you’re allowed to.

2. Who can use it

You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, a parent or guardian must agree to these Terms for you and is responsible for how you use the Service.

A DM who runs a table for younger players is responsible for keeping that table suitable for them, including its gore setting.

3. Players, DMs, keys and accounts

  • Players join a table with its code, link or QR code and a name. They don’t need an account.
  • Keys. A DM’s tables, maps and library are kept under a DM key, and a player’s saved characters under a player key. Your browser keeps your key. Anyone who has a key can open everything it opens, so treat it like a password and copy it only to devices you trust. We can’t recover a lost key, and we can’t tell who is using one.
  • Accounts. When we offer accounts (an email address and a password), you must give accurate information, keep your sign-in private, and tell us straight away if you think someone else has used your account.
  • Table codes. Anyone who has a table’s code or link can ask to join it, so share it only with your group. A DM can remove anyone from their table.

You are responsible for what happens at your tables and under your key or account.

4. Your content

“Your content” is what you put into the Service: names, characters, chat messages, notes, maps you build or upload, monsters you make, and pictures you upload.

  • It stays yours. You keep any rights you have in your content.
  • You let us use it to run the game. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, copy, process, resize, display and send your content, only as needed to run, protect and improve the Service: for example, to show your token to everyone at your table, or to keep your map for next week. The licence ends when your content is deleted from the Service, except for copies that stay in backups for a short time (see the Privacy Policy) and content that others at your table have already received.
  • You have the right to share it. You promise that you have the rights to what you upload and that it doesn’t break the law or anyone else’s rights. In particular, only make tokens from photos of people who are happy for you to, and don’t upload art, maps or text copied from books, published adventures or other people’s work unless you have permission or the law allows it.
  • Who sees it. The DM can see everything at their table, including every picture a player uploads there. Players see what the DM shows them.

We don’t review content before it appears, but we may remove content or close a table that breaks these Terms.

5. Rules of the table

Don’t use the Service to:

  • break the law, or help anyone else break it;
  • harass, threaten, bully or impersonate anyone, or post content that attacks people for who they are;
  • post sexual content involving anyone under 18, or sexual content of any real person without their consent;
  • share someone’s private information without their permission;
  • upload malware or anything meant to harm people’s devices or the Service;
  • interfere with the Service: overload it, get around its limits, probe or break its security, or reach it with bots or scrapers except in the ways the Service itself allows;
  • resell, rent or give out access to the Service, or copy its art and code except as the licences on our Credits page allow.

Fantasy violence and gore that are part of the game are fine at a table where everyone has agreed to them. The DM sets the gore level, and can turn it down or off.

If you believe something on the Service infringes your copyright, email us at hello@torchandtile.com with:

  • your name and how to reach you;
  • the work you believe was copied;
  • where it appears on the Service (for example, the table code and what it is);
  • a statement that you believe in good faith that the use isn’t authorised by the owner, its agent or the law;
  • a statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you own the copyright or may act for its owner; and
  • your physical or electronic signature.

We remove material that infringes, and we close the keys or accounts of people who infringe repeatedly. If your content was removed and you believe that was a mistake, you can send us a counter-notice at the same address.

7. The optional AI helpers

Some features use artificial intelligence (“AI”) to make things such as a monster picture or a map from a description. They are off by default, and they run only at tables whose DM has turned them on. Everything else in the Service works without them.

  • When you use an AI helper, what you give it (your description, and any picture you hand it) is sent to our AI provider to make the result. The Privacy Policy says who that is. Please don’t put personal information into an AI helper.
  • AI results can be wrong, strange, or not what you asked for. Look them over before you use them. You are responsible for how you use what they make.
  • We don’t promise that an AI result is unique, or that it is free of other people’s rights. As far as we hold any rights in a result made for you, you may use it at your tables and in your games.
  • A plan with AI helpers may include a monthly allowance. When it runs out, the AI helpers pause until the next month. Everything else keeps working.

8. Plans, payment and cancelling

  • Players always play free.
  • The beta is free. Everyone uses the Service free while it is in beta. After the beta, running tables will need a paid DM plan, with the prices shown on our pricing page. We will tell you before the beta ends and before anything costs you money.
  • Billing. Paid plans are billed in advance each month through our payment processor and renew automatically until you cancel. When you subscribe, you authorise us and our payment processor to charge your payment method each month. Prices don’t include taxes unless we say they do.
  • Cancelling. You can cancel at any time. Your plan stays active until the end of the month you have paid for, and then it doesn’t renew. Payments aren’t refunded, including for part of a month, except where the law requires a refund or where we say otherwise.
  • Price changes. We will tell you about a price change at least 30 days before it applies to you. It takes effect at your first renewal after that notice. If you don’t want the new price, cancel before then.
  • Trials and offers follow the terms shown when you get them.
  • Failed payments. If a payment fails, we may pause your paid features until it is sorted out. Your tables aren’t deleted straight away.

9. Game rules and trademarks

The Service includes material from the System Reference Document 5.1 by Wizards of the Coast LLC, used under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License. Our Credits page gives the full attribution, and the credits and licences for the open-source software the Service is built on.

Torch & Tile is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored or approved by Wizards of the Coast LLC. Other names and marks belong to their owners.

10. Our part

The Service, including its software, design, art, maps, creatures, text, name and logo, belongs to us and is protected by law. The exceptions are the parts that come from others with their own licences: they are listed on our Credits page and stay under those licences. Subject to these Terms, we give you a personal, non-transferable permission to use the Service, which we may withdraw if you break these Terms. You may not copy the Service, run your own copy of it, or sell access to it. If you send us ideas or suggestions, we may use them without owing you anything.

11. A service that changes

The Service is in beta. We may add, change or remove features and limits, and it may sometimes be down for maintenance or because something broke. We keep backups, but we can’t promise that tables, maps, characters or pictures will never be lost, so keep your own copy of anything you can’t do without.

12. Ending things

  • You can stop using the Service at any time. A DM can delete a table, with its maps and pictures, for good. To have a key or account and everything under it deleted, write to us.
  • We may suspend or end your access, remove content or close tables if you break these Terms, if the law requires it, or to protect people or the Service. If we end a paid plan for any other reason, we will refund the unused part.
  • We may stop offering the Service. If we do, we will give paying DMs at least 30 days’ notice and refund any time they have paid for and not used.
  • Sections that by their nature should last after these Terms end will last, including sections 4 (for content already shared), 13, 14, 15 and 16.

13. No promises beyond these

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE”, AND WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DON’T PROMISE THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE OR FREE OF ERRORS, OR THAT ANY CONTENT WILL BE KEPT.

Some places don’t allow these exclusions, so some of them may not apply to you.

14. Limits on our liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT THE LAW ALLOWS, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ALL CLAIMS ABOUT THE SERVICE IS LIMITED TO THE GREATER OF THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE AND US$50.

Nothing in these Terms limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited.

15. Claims caused by you

If someone makes a claim against us because you broke these Terms or the law, or because your content infringed someone’s rights, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of that claim, including legal fees, to the extent the law allows.

16. Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Texas, United States, without regard to its rules on conflicts of law. If you have a problem with the Service, please contact us first: most things can be sorted out quickly, and we ask that you give us 30 days to try before starting a legal claim. Any dispute that can’t be settled that way will be decided by the courts of the State of Texas, United States, unless the law where you live gives you the right to bring it in your local courts.

17. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms. We will post the new version on this page with a new date, and for important changes we will give notice on the site, or by email to account holders, at least 14 days before they take effect. If you keep using the Service after that, the new Terms apply to you.

18. The rest

These Terms and the Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service. If part of these Terms can’t be enforced, the rest still applies. If we don’t enforce a right straight away, we haven’t given it up. You may not transfer your rights under these Terms to someone else; we may transfer ours to whoever takes over the Service.
